The unit is in the Raleigh company’zs Wayne County Energy Complexnear Goldsboro. The $90 millio combustion-turbine unit, like four others at the can be fueled by either natura l gasor low-sulfur oil. Together, the facilities can generat up to836 megawatts. The units provide “peakinbg power” generation at times of highest demaned such as cold winter mornings or hotsummer afternoons. The Wayns County plant began commercial operationin 2000. It is near 474 megawatt Lee Plant, which has thre e coal-fired units.
Lloyd Yates, president and CEO of ProgreszsEnergy Carolinas, said in a written statementt that the additional capacitt is a critical part of meeting futurde energy needs. “Summer typically brings the highest peak demandrfor electricity, and we’re ready for whatever Mothet Nature brings,” he said.
